News Bulletin: Marvin Hamlisch

Music4Life joins the world of music in mourning the loss of composer Marvin Hamlisch (click here for more details).  Besides being a founding Honorary Co-Chair of the Music4Life Peace Initiative, he was an elegant gift to us all.

The “Music4Life Peace Initiative” (M4L PI) is an annual event that brings three or four young musicians from each of two distinctive cultures to Seattle. The youngsters participate in a one- to two-week summer music camp program, learn that they can work together cooperatively through the international language of music and then take those lessons home with them. Composer Marvin Hamlisch and Seattle Symphony Conductor Laureate Gerard Schwarz serve as Honorary Co-Chairs of the M4L PI Advisory Board.

The Music4Life Peace Initiative will welcome young musicians from Armenia and Turkey to Seattle on July 15, 2013.  They will be co-sponsored here by the Rotary Club of Yerevan and the Rotary Club of Istanbul Tuzla.  Local coordination is being arranged in Yerevan by Narine Karinyan and in Istanbul by Ismail Turfanda.  Both are Rotarians.

The Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra (SYSO) has a summer camp program called Marrowstone in the City that is held each year in Seattle. PI is working with the SYSO to organize a PI program within Marrowstone in the City. The international young musicians will stay in Seattle for about two weeks, participate in the PI at Marrowstone in the City (culminating with public Friday night concerts), take some time before and after the two-week program to get acquainted with the U.S. and then return home. Several current participants in the program in Seattle and Highline Public Schools will likely be provided scholarships to play in the PI. Students in schools supported by M4L are expected to be named to participate in the annual summer program.

The M4L PI is another community activity that is Rotary-inspired.  It is not necessary to be a Member of a Rotary Club to support the M4L PI. All that is necessary is that a person understand the unique value that participation in instrumental music education has in the life of a young person.

The M4L PI is being organized by the staff of Seattle Music4Life and by an Advisory Board comprised of Rotarians and non-Rotarians alike.
