The creative concept for Music4Life™ was born in the fall of 2007
and is an ongoing program. The immediate goal is to put musical instruments in good playing condition into the hands of children and youth wishing to use them now. Procure the instruction, supplies and support (like instrument maintenance) to strengthen the elementary instrumental music program and ensure strong music programs throughout Highline Public Schools.
We are acquiring musical instruments, supplies and other resources from members of Rotary clubs in the greater Seattle area and from other citizens who understand the value of music in a child’s life. We work with instrument manufacturers, rental agencies, wholesalers, retailers, and others around the world who have access to serviceable musical instruments. Anyone who loves music and believes in music education for all children can join the effort!
Music Education in Highline Public Schools
Highline Public Schools is a diverse family of schools, serving students in a dynamic, standards-based learning community.
Highline Music4Life begins by serving schools with immediate needs and high numbers of students on “Free and Reduced Lunch” (FRL)*, and then expand to serving schools district-wide.
Highline Music4Life begins by providing musical instruments to fifth and sixth graders who qualify for the free- and reduced-lunch program. In special circumstances, we can provide instruments to older children, as well. Our goal is to enable as many young people to take advantage of these instrumental music opportunities as possible.
“We know that there are students interested in instrumental music but don’t have the resources to acquire an instrument,” says Stefan Nelson, the new Cultural Arts Specialist for Highline Public Schools.
“As a matter of equity, we need to increase the availability of instruments to all of our students, especially for our schools in high poverty areas. With enough new or used instruments, we can increase elementary instrumental music participation significantly.”
Currently, 24 percent of all fifth and sixth grade students in Highline Public Schools participate in instrumental music programs. The Highline Music4Life initiative intends to increase that number to 40 percent.
Highline Public Schools Visual and Performing Arts Goal:
• To build a comprehensive and equitable arts education program that fosters every child’s creative capacities, and that is:
• Available to all students at all schools regardless of income
• Aligned among grades so that students follow a clear progression as they master skills
• Consistent with Washington State’s arts standards
• Supported by parents, teachers and community leaders
• Sustainable with public and private funding
